n pl -ties
1. the state of having unique identifying characteristics held by no other person or thing
2. the individual characteristics by which a person or thing is recognized
[from Late Latin identitās, from Latin idem the same]
If I am to return to the primitive, then I should seek that which is the essence of me - my identity. Now that's a hard concept to grasp. If I was lined up in an identity parade, would the observer know from that who I am? No - they would see my appearance, the clothes I wear, my posture and body language, but all those are only part of me - they are not the whole me - they are not my identity. I am, a mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin, employee, colleague, supervisor, bitch next door, pain in the ass, friend, confidante, acquaintance, godmother, customer and many other things. Many other people are many of these things too, so these roles and relationships are only another part of my identity. Some of these roles and relationships mean more to me than others - some I would say are my raison d'etre and I will nurture and treasure these relationships and roles. Others, I couldn't give two hoots about but some are necessary. What I would like added to this list are the things I aspire to be called - writer, singer, gardener, wisewoman, healer, artist, poet, traveller, adventurer and skinny minny. This list might (and should grow)
